    Random Recitals

The good writing of any age has always been the product of someone's neurosis, and we'd have a mighty dull literature if all the writers that came along were a bunch of happy chuckleheads.

    have democrats never played poker?

You don’t show your hand before everyone antes up:

President-elect Barack Obama will meet with congressional leaders in Washington on Monday to discuss his economic stimulus package, a plan that reports say will include $300 billion in tax cuts.

The tax cuts for individuals and businesses would account for about 40 per cent of the stimulus package, which is expected to be between $675 billion and $775 [...]

rejected, for all the wrong reasons

In a moment of historic drama in the Capitol and on Wall Street, the House of Representatives voted on Monday to reject a $700 billion rescue of the financial industry.

The vote against the measure was 228 to 205. Supporters vowed to try to bring the rescue package up for consideration against as soon as possible.

Stock markets plunged sharply at midday as it appeared that the [...]

    my tiny contribution

This bumper sticker is on sale now at Cafe Press, with all proceeds to the Obama/Biden campaign:

Cafe press gives substantial discounts on packs of 10 or 50.

We cannot afford to lose this one – though that won’t stop the Dems from trying.

    judgment day

I never gave much credence to Hillary or anyone else who argued against Barack Obama on the basis of experience; executive or management experience is always good when you are applying for an executive position, but the post of President and Commander in Chief is so far afield from any other job that it comes down more to judgment, intelligence, critical thinking and world view. [...]

all i can do now is pity her

Former Hillary Clinton volunteer Carol Anderson of Vancouver, who is attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver, made New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s snarky political column Wednesday with her less-than-charitable observations about Barack and Michelle Obama.

Anderson stood in the back of the room at a meeting of the Democratic Women’s Caucus wearing a Hillary T-shirt, a hat signed by the New York senator, and [...]

I Almost Forgot, It’s Always the Dems Fault

A letter to the editor in The Columbian today:

    Can we afford change?

President Bush has been in office for approximately 7½ years. During the first six years of his presidency the economy was fine. Consumer confidence stood at a 2½-year high; regular gasoline sold for approximately $2.19 a gallon; the unemployment rate was 4.5 percent; the Dow Jones hit a record high at 14,000 plus; Americans [...]

    pco invite

FWIW, I just received this email from the Clark County Dems Central Committee:

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A PRECINCT COMMITTEE OFFICER (PCO)?

You should have received your ballot in the mail already. If you want to be more involved and become a PCO, look on your ballot and see if there is a Democratic PCO in your precinct or not. If the space is blank, write [...]

    Sociometrics

lthough I am a native Washingtonian, Seattle born, I knew nothing about Vancouver until I came here in 1992. It did not take long for me to appreciate why some people–including native Vancouverites–refer to Vancouver as “Couve Holler” or “Vantucky”. In the apparent establishment, such as it is, the same names, associations, backgrounds and networks kept coming up over and over. And in this [...]
