The Benton Apple Falls Not Far From the Money Tree

The race for State Senate in the 17th legislative district will be heating up soon after the general election officially ‘starts’ after the August 19th primary.  The primary, designed to produce a candidate to take on incumbent senator/serial fund raiser Don Benton, was rendered moot when software developer Martin Hash dropped out in favor of David Carrier, economics instructor and political activist.  Hash worried [...]

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 BY BRETT OPPEGAARD for The Columbian

A nonprofit group’s plans to build a performing arts center in Clark County are growing bolder, despite previous setbacks.

The Southwest Washington Center for the Arts recently released the results of a $30,000 feasibility study – conducted by Vancouver’s E.D. Hovee Co. – which calls for a $100 million mixed-use arts, retail and [...]

Waldman tears Russert a new one

Over at American Prospect, republished by Common Dreams, I could not help but notice this article, it being a fact that major media control of our country is a major concern to me. Paul Waldman talks about the sound bites that pretend to be Democratic Presidential debates and Russert’s question to the candidates about their favorite bible verse:

When Obama finished his answer, Russert [...]

Is a dirty house good for your health?

This story about asthma, Allergy-Induced Asthma More Common in Affluent Countries, reminded me of a George Carlin routine in which he said:

“in my neighborhood no one ever got polio, no one, ever. you know why? cause we swam in the east river. we swam in raw sewage! it strengthened our immune systems, the polio never had a prayer, we were tempered in [...]

    Gore deserves it

Poll indicates he can take out Clinton.

But if Mr Gore were to seek the Democratic nomination, 29% of Ms Clinton's backers would switch their support to him, the poll found. When defections from other candidates are factored in, the man who controversially lost to Mr Bush in the 2000 election takes command of the field, with 32% support.

    How is this possible?  [...]

After Imus: What you can do

    From Robert McChesney and Freepress:

    Dear Media Reformers,

The controversy over Don Imus’ racist remarks goes far beyond one bigoted commentator. But getting rid of Imus won’t fix the media problem.

Most of our TV and radio stations are owned by giant corporate conglomerates. They don’t represent the views of most Americans — and they make huge profits off the public airwaves.

What we need are more diverse, independent and local media owners. Yet right now less than 10% of TV and radio stations are owned by people of color or women.

But instead of addressing this national disgrace, the Federal Communications Commission is actually trying to let the largest companies buy up even more stations!

Tell the FCC: We Need More Diversity in the Media

What Imus said is just the tip of the iceberg. Scores of other TV and radio hosts regularly make racist and sexist comments. The best way to stop this race to the bottom is to change who’s sitting at the top — and making the decisions about who’s behind the mic.

    Saturday Night Shut-in Theater

When Saturday Night Live had interesting musical guests…

Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart was blues-influenced psychedelic musician possessing a multi-octave voice that at times resembled the feral growl of Howlin’ Wolf. He was a childhood friend of fellow Lancaster CA resident Frank Zappa and the two collaborated for many years. Although Zappa’s fame later eclipsed Van Vliet’s, Captain Beefheart was actually signed to A&M records before Zappa’s first album. He had a minor hit with a single of Diddy Wah Diddy, but continually had problems with labels, mainly due to his unwillingness to produce an orthodox sounding single and his not being a businessman in any sense of the word.
