New Year resolutions to impeach for the Feb 9 caucus

Thanks to Glen Anderson for creating and Betty Glenn for fowarding this info about introducing resolutions at the Feb. 9 caucus calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

On SATURDAY FEBRUARY 9, 2008, both of the big political parties will hold their precinct caucuses in Washington State. (Check local media or contact your political party for time, locations, and other information.) This is an opportunity to introduce resolutions calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

TWO SAMPLE RESOLUTIONS:

Consider introducing these or developing your own:

RESOLUTION #1:

WHEREAS, George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney have:

(1) Knowingly used fraudulent information to persuade Congress and the American people to support the war in Iraq; and

(2) Repeatedly violated people’s civil liberties and due process and tortured many people; and

(3) Illegally spied on U.S. citizens without a warrant; and

(4) Violated their oaths of office to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution;

THEREFORE, we citizens and residents of the _______________ Precinct of Clark County in Washington State do hereby call for the U.S. House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney.

RESOLUTION #2:

WHEREAS House Resolution 799 (H.Res.799) has been introduced on the floor of the US House of Representatives with 23 sponsors and is in the Judiciary Committee; and

WHEREAS H.Res.799 lays out some but not all of the offenses of the Vice President, including:

~ Purposely manipulating intelligence to fabricate a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in order to justify an attack on Iraq

~ Deceiving Congress about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda

~ Threatening aggression against the Republic of Iran, without any real threat to the United States; and

WHEREAS Article II, Section 4 of the US Constitution provides impeachment as an orderly way to stop abuse of power by executive officers;

THEREFORE, we citizens and residents of the _______________ Precinct of Clark County in Washington State do hereby instruct our elected members of the U.S. House of Representatives to support H.Res.799, which calls for impeaching Richard Cheney.

A very important part of the precinct caucus agenda is the consideration and adoption of resolutions that guide the local, state and national Democratic Party platforms that will be developed in the next few months. Over the years progressive activists have introduced a variety of resolutions taking positions on specific issues. When a large number of precincts adopt the same or similar resolutions, those positions immediately catch the attention of the Democratic Party and tend to be incorporated into the platforms.

The precinct caucus is on a tight time frame, and it relies on a specific formal procedure, so please keep any resolutions brief so they can easily be read aloud or read on paper. The longer the resolution, the more likely it will contain something that a person will object to or be confused by. Short resolutions are much more likely to be adopted. Bring several copies printed out on paper, and be prepared to leave a few copies with the precinct caucus facilitator and/or secretary.
