    Political Standoff in Lebanon

    Thursday, May 10, 7:30 to 9:00pm
    Smith Memorial Student Union

Portland State University’s Middle East Studies Center (MESC) and Palestine Lebanon Emergency Action (PLEA) announce a sixth forum in their Middle East educational series. The full series, intended to provide background and context on a range of current issues in the Middle East region, offers speakers on topics including Palestine, Lebanon and Islam. This event, “Political Standoff in Lebanon”, features Augustus Richard Norton, Professor of international relations and anthropology at Boston University, and an adviser to the Iraq Study Group.

Dr. Norton is one of the country’s leading experts on political Islam. Prior to joining the faculty at Boston University, Norton was a career Army officer: his service included 12 years on the West Point faculty, two years in combat in Vietnam and over a year as a military observer in southern Lebanon in the early 80′s.

Dr. Norton’s newest book, Hezbollah: A Short History, was published this month (April). Professor Norton favors engagement with Islamic movements that participate in democratic politics, including groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Portland State University is the only institution of higher education in Oregon with a degree-based Middle East program. PSU has a distinguished faculty with Middle East expertise. MESC is committed to providing information about the Middle East in an open and objective atmosphere while providing an institutional bridge between the PSU campus and greater community.

Palestine Lebanon Emergency Action (PLEA) is an alliance formed in response to Israel’s invasion of Lebanon. It consists of local human rights groups, faith organizations and individuals with family ties to the regions of Lebanon and Gaza. The group advocates international law and universal human rights.
