Why will it take until June to get that stimulus mad money out to you?
I.R.S. computer and other systems “are today fully engaged in processing 2007 tax returns,” the committee said Monday in a report. “As a result, it is not practical to contemplate distributing cash rebates until the peak filing season is completed, which in past years has been the very end of May.”
Can someone please tell me why it wouldn’t make more sense to just have people deduct the $600 from their tax returns? Then checks would just go out as normal tax refunds – even to those who don’t pay taxes or get the Earned Income Tax Credit.
This year, when Oregon sent out its unfortunate kicker checks, it cost the state $2 million just to send out the checks: 80¢ a piece.
But Bush wants to send out two checks (one rebate and one tax refund) to about 118 million people – at an extra cost of about $94 million.
Why are they so goddamn stupid?

Come on….Think about it. Allowing a tax deduction of the same amount won’t allow George and the elected criminals to be the hero, “sending you a check to SAVE the economy”.
I am constantly amazed that folks can make half of a connection and not go all the way. When you question the motives of our elected tyrants, you need only think of two things greed and ego. Lust for power is ego and greed rolled into one. There is nothing done in government that doesn’t involve both of those traits, greed and ego run this country.
I won’t go into how, constitutionally and biblically, the churches in this country should have pervented this and how they have abrograted their responsibilites. I am Christian, I am not corporate church, don’t blame God for what you watch these men do. God set the rules and allows anyone to break them, including those that claim to have some sort of authority on His behalf. Those church leaders do not have a special place with God, in fact, I wouldn’t want to be one of them at judgement day.
Slim, common sense isn’t a prereq for a bottom feeder, it’s just GREED for them, plus a power trip.
Because all the software has been written, the forms created and sent out, the accountants have their processes in place.
Because when dealing with tax refunds, it is not just the government. Turbotax, HR block, etc would all have massive software re-writes while causing unknown delays to any tax refund at all.
This isn’t free. The cost of $94m in a 2nd check is probably comparable to the cost of reprogramming everything right in the middle of doing something else.
I was really being hypothetical, but it is a serious question.
They could make it simpler if they wanted- if they can approve someone for Medicare within a week then they can come up with a matrix for adding the $300/$600 to the tax return at the IRS, with no changes to the software or tax services being necessary.
But Jeff and Allen are right – the pols don’t want their credit for the mad money lost in the shuffle.
