    Random Recitals

Such close observations of apes and birds and dolphins remind us that humanity is part of a great animal kingdom. All species within this kingdom differ from one another in significant ways, to be sure, but the kingdom does not seem to be organized on the superior/inferior hierarchy. Species are merely different from one another; they are not better than, nor more or less advanced than, each other. The core experience of all animal life is strikingly similar.

Are You Married to the Internet?

Apparently a lot of young Germans are or at least they’d ditch their spouse for the internet:

German twenty-somethings would ditch their spouses and do without a car in a heartbeat if they had to choose between having them or Internet access or a mobile phone, according to an industry study.

In a survey by German broadband association Bitkom around 84 percent of respondents aged 19-29 said they would rather do without their current partner or an automobile than forego their connection to the Web.

I consider myself a nethead but this is scary.  Is the internet causing us to no longer care about each other?  Do we love our machines more than our loved ones?  Or is it the people inside the machines that we love?
