This move on his part makes some sense out of his erratic behavior of late.
So who is going to run to replace him? The Republicans are ecstatic. Unless the Democratic Congress can fix the economy and health care very quickly, the gains seen in 2006 and 2008 will evaporate or worse.

John, estatic might be a little strong, although some may feel that way. Personally, I think Baird made the right move, but he still has a year in office left to appease or upset voters.
I think its going to be interesting to see who ya’ll put up. I keep hearing Craig Pridemore or Deb Wallace. Personally, I think Deb would be a much more formidable candidate than Pridemore.
I guess we’ll all see as we get into the primaries.
With the top two primary system, I expect one person will emerge (and I’d put money on who that will be) and the others will bow out. And that is unfortunate and not a democratic process.
Speaking of which, Wallace is in.
John, I totally agree with you on the top two primary system, I don’t like it either.
I’m curious to see now if Pridemore will throw his hat in or someone else from up state a bit.
With Jaime Herrera throwing her hat in yesterday, Russell and Hedrick don’t stand a chance.
What hurts her is the timing, announcing within two hours of Baird’s announcement.
It’s turning out to be quite an interesting race, I think.
Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Baird would likely be defeated anyway. His last win wasn’t very strong and he’s betrayed his constituents thoroughly. Perhaps more importantly, he’s vested in his retirement plan and has a lifetime income and health care, so why stay? Democrats have become Republicans, Republicans have become Fascists, and most independents, like Nader, are actually barely liberal at all. We have no real left political group any longer. The only thing we can do is replace the elected officials as rapidly as we can. Nader was right. One political party, two heads. We can vote for a war-mongering Republican or a war-mongering Democrat. We can vote for a corporate Republican or a corporate Democrat. A no-nothing on global warming Republican or a no-nothing Democrat. Since 2000 it has been almost impossible to really tell which party is doing what, they are all the same. The only difference is who they are paying off. The end result for America is the same.
Robert1234,
Nice to know I am not alone in my thinking. An apocalyptic event is all we have to look forward to since activism/voting/contributions are all meaningless.
