Hamas and its supporters must understand that Gaza cannot and will not be allowed to be a sanctuary for attacks on Israel.” (Yitzhak Benhorin, Washington) …

Ms. Pelosi,

All I can say is, your statement is appalling. Quite literally, upon reading this statement I (A.) lost my stomach, and (B.) cried. Get a CLUE. The world will not allow apartheid nor extermination to continue. America must ragain its moral leadership. Israel has found a way to rid itself of the Palestinian problem and is exercising the solution…extermination and removal. Israel has created it’s own Auschwitz in Gaza. You make me puke. I have never spoken so bluntly and sharply to an elected official, and fellow Democrat. I am known for my forbearance and my insistence upon respectful dialogue. But, your unbelievable nonsense is all I can take. You don’t deserve my deference or my respect. Mark my words, you and your ilk will be swept aside in short order. The people have spoken their desire for change. The world watched and celebrated in anticipation of change. If you (and the Obama administration) don’t heed the call for peace, justice, and moral, responsible leadership, it will be unfortunate.

Judith Shattuck

www.youtube.com/watch?v=cydRpiFI4fc

Now how do we get rid of these elected leaders again when most of us blindly vote the party incumbent over the person? We need a campaign system that levels the playing field and enables more candidates to challenge incumbents and win. One of the ways this is done is by voluntarily (until Buckley v. Asian investors, for instance, were quick to evince “unprecedented” skepticism about U.S. assets in the opening moments of the crisis…

Since September, however, the same sovereign wealth funds have proved skittish indeed about helping U.S. financial outfits, thus eliminating another possible resource for responding to credit shortfalls.

At some point, tighter global credit conditions are sure to significantly constrain America’s freedom of action internationally. After all, Chinese and East Asian investors, to offer but one example, are now quite capable of reining in, and even undermining, the federal government (if they choose to), rather than vice versa.

The United States has always prized individualism, and in the beginning, this extended to avoiding “foreign entanglements” as well, as George Washington warned against in his farewell address. But the expansion across the North American continent not only provided the impetus for excluding other nations from our land- and resource-rich prize, but also granted the U.S. the wealth necessary to defend this prize and to project our power first in the Western hemisphere with the Monroe Doctrine, and then across the Pacific with Manifest Destiny, and finally, after World War II and with the advent of the Cold War, into the many places abandoned by the imperial powers of Europe and Japan. Our alliance with Israel brought further military “investment” in the Middle East; the fall of the Soviet Union opened up Eastern Europe to U.S. troops; and after September 11 the Bush Administration expanded our presence into almost every other vacant spot on the map. Currently, the U.S. military has bases or troops in more than 150 countries.

Power may be the ultimate aphrodisiac, as Henry Kissinger famously quipped; but the man himself is living proof that power is also a gateway drug to an addiction only satisfied by more, and greater, power.

The U.S. military budget for fiscal 2009 – which does not include the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as these continue to be “emergency expenditures” despite the fact that each has now surpassed World War II in duration – is $515 billion dollars, a breathtaking amount considering that it is only for a single year, and that U.S. military expenditures seem to know no direction but “up.” Only Social Security takes more from the U.S. Treasury, and military spending absorbs more tax dollars than Education, Transportation, Veterans, Justice, Natural Resources, Environment, Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, Community Development, Science and Technology, and Government Administration combined.

Is this really the best use of our resources, in a world where we spend more on our military than all of the other nations on the planet – again – combined, and when we are falling behind the rest of the industrialized world in areas as critical as education, infant mortality, and the availability of health care?

On the same day that Aziz Huq published his piece about the inevitable contraction of the American empire, Barrons published a bullish article on the near-term prospects for defense-related stocks, even under an Obama administration:

“It doesn’t really matter” who wins the presidency since both candidates are making defense a priority, says Thomas Nyheim, portfolio manager at Christiana Bank & Trust.

He is overweight defense in part because “a lot of the projects that are on the books have three-year, five-year and 10-year life for their contracts.”

Many defense stocks are hovering near decade-low valuations. Yet, the industry’s annual earnings are expected to climb in the double-digits for the next few years.

In post-9/11 America, “it is political suicide” to even cut a dollar from the defense budget” given the threat of terrorism and increasing geopolitical strife, says Scott Sacknoff, manager of the Spade Defense Index.

The U.S. needs to upgrade and replace military equipment that is either decades old or battered from fighting simultaneous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

These realities make the overall defense budget fairly bulletproof.

Time will tell.

The last four decades have seen U.S. citizens pulling back, intellectually, from any involvement in the world other than military; our focus has become increasingly parochial, and infamously shallow. This has been nowhere more evident than in our elections, which have been influenced far more by John Kerry’s windsurfing and Bush’s beer-buddy persona than the critical issues now crashing around our ears.

But this latest crisis seems to have woken us from our reverie; we are out of the poppy field and looking critically, if also fearfully, at the issues and the candidates for the first time in decades. September 11 could not keep us sane for more than a few news cycles, but the threat to our livelihoods, our homes, our bank and retirement accounts have proved a stronger antidote to the ether of American Idol and Fox News.

If absolute power corrupts absolutely, perhaps the weakening of the absolute power of Wall Street (and the waning appeal of T-Bills worldwide) will force us to look realistically at our position in the world, and come to terms with our deep national need for global dominance.

Million Doors for Peace – Help End The Occupation

Iraq

Peace

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI7z44NCMFw

This Saturday it is happening. Maybe just a little preemptive strike, then?

Bush has made me so gun-shy that even Obama’s Pax Americana talk is starting to scare me:

This is the moment when we must defeat terror and dry up the well of extremism that supports it. This threat is real and we cannot shrink from our responsibility to combat it. If we could create NATO to face down the Soviet Union, we can join in a new and global partnership to dismantle the networks that have struck in Madrid and Amman; in London and Bali; in Washington and New York. If we could win a battle of ideas against the communists, we can stand with the vast majority of Muslims who reject the extremism that leads to hate instead of hope.

This is the moment when we must renew our resolve to rout the terrorists who threaten our security in Afghanistan, and the traffickers who sell drugs on your streets. No one welcomes war. I recognize the enormous difficulties in Afghanistan. But my country and yours have a stake in seeing that NATO’s first mission beyond Europe’s borders is a success. For the people of Afghanistan, and for our shared security, the work must be done. America cannot do this alone. The Afghan people need our troops and your troops; our support and your support to defeat the Taliban and al Qaeda, to develop their economy, and to help them rebuild their nation. We have too much at stake to turn back now.

Instead of the world’s policeman, why don’t we try a few decades as the world’s Shriner clown? We can pick up all the shit our military has dropped over the last hundred years as it has paraded through countries that caused us no harm. We could build a few hospitals, entertain the people, and never kill or maim a soul.

We may think such a role is beneath us, but just think about all those old guys bellydancing down Main Street in their fezzes: they may look ridiculous, but they do a lot of good. And they clean up after themselves.

We could reduce our expenditures on military hardware and personnel so that we have only twice or three times what the next largest national military has, instead of ten times our nearest competitor. And we could use the “peace dividend” that results to retire our massive and unprecedented national debt, rebuild the dollar, pay reparations to the Iraqis and help get their country truly back on track, and reduce the amount of hatred and anger the world feels for the U.S.

Domestically, we could fully fund the care and education of our returning veterans and still have money left over for universal single-payer healthcare, free college education for all qualifying citizens, and the biggest infrastructure construction and rebuilding investment since the Great Depression.

We could invest in green technologies and wean ourselves off fossil fuels within ten years.

We could reduce green house emissions and invest in reforestation projects around the globe to trap decades of the carbon that we have released into our atmosphere.

But, with talk like Obama’s in Berlin, it looks like we’ll stay in the Big Stick business whether Obama wins or loses.

And that’s is something we should all grieve. Because while we do have the power to be the world’s policeman, with a change of motivation from fear and nationalism to compassion and humanism, we could build a global commonwealth of true freedom: political, social and economic.

But being the world’s policeman makes us feel much better about our national penis size – and keeps the GEs and Halliburtons of the world fat and greedy – so rational change is unlikely.

And that is the type of terrorism we should be fighting.

may day

Labor

Peace

War on terror

afghanistan

anti-war protests

Iraq

As a person who works in the maritime industry, which is pretty conservative, this is cool*:

THE ILWU West Coast longshore workers have voted to “stop work to protest the US war and occupation on Iraq and Afghanistan on May Day 2008,” the ILWU said. An analogy of our current state of affairs comes to mind of the spouse (i.e. we Americans) who refuses to acknowledge that his/her mate is unfaithful (i.e. our government’s illegal and immoral Iraq occupation and the lies supporting the occupation). The cuckolded spouse makes up all kinds of excuses and rationalizations about their spouse’s behavior and the lies supporting that behavior but deep down he/she knows, as does everyone else, what is really happening. It is the state of denial itself of the immorality of the behavior on the part of the “betrayed” spouse (i.e. we Americans) that allows the destructive behavior to continue. Only by standing up for oneself and actually doing something about the situation will the errant behavior stop.

Here is an especially pithy comment to the OpEd News article, When A Great Power Goes Mad:

Hold the candidates accountable

Parry wrote (my emphasis in bold):

“During the post-World War II trials at Nuremberg, the United States led the world in decrying aggressive war as “the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.”

Yet, Frontline and other mainstream U.S. news outlets shy away from this central fact of the Iraq War: by invading Iraq without the approval of the U.N. Security Council and under false pretenses, the Bush administration released upon the Iraqi people “the accumulated evil of the whole” – and committed the “supreme” war crime.

An obvious reason why the mainstream U.S. press can’t handle this truth is that to do so would mean that President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, a host of other U.S. officials and even some prominent journalists could be regarded as war criminals.

To accept that reality would, in turn, create a moral imperative to take action. And that would require a great disruption in the existing U.S. power structure, which hasn’t changed much since Bush won authorization from Congress in October 2002 to use force and then invaded Iraq in March 2003.”

And what, if anything, will truly change with this next election? Parry states that “Frontline and other mainstream U.S. news outlets shy away” but it is also our candidates and the American people who “shy away.”

None of the “big 3″ presidential candidates is willing to show any courage or real leadership on this issue. None is willing to say that US conduct in Iraq has been “the supreme international crime.” None is willing to fight for global justice.

Instead, what is offered to voters from “the loyal opposition?” We are told of Bush’s INCOMPETENCE in Iraq. The implication, of course, is that his invasion of Iraq was legal but perhaps ill-advised. We are told of his poor strategy in carrying out the occupation but nothing of Iraq’s sovereignty and our illegitimate occupation. And we are and will be told that, rather than “put the nation through any sort of war crimes trial”, we should “get beyond all the partisan bickering” and move the nation forward.

Does anyone care about justice and accountability anymore?

Roughly one million INNOCENT Iraqis died under the sanctions imposed by Bush I and by Bill Clinton. What right did the US have, whether “approved by the UN or not”, to starve to death innocent Iraqis, including more than a quarter million children? If the topic cannot even be introduced into the national dialog during the presidential election process, is there really any hope for meaningful change?

And now there are at least another million dead Iraqis because of Bush’s invasion. War crime? You’re damned straight it is! What kind of useless political process are we running in this country when candidates wouldn’t dare make such an accusation? Sorry, candidates, the marketing department would prefer that you not use such inflammatory rhetoric. Give me a break.

The article’s title, “When a Great Power Goes Mad” is just perfect. Sadly, our candidates and those who endorse them are also to blame. We demand no accountability; we get no accountability; and we get no change. Unacceptable. When our political institutions are incapable of honoring our values and beliefs, it’s time to make radical changes in those institutions. If you keep voting for those who will not stand in true opposition to the tyranny of US imperialism, you are voting for the status quo and for all the injustice, suffering and destruction that implies.

by welshTerrier2 (6 articles, 2 quicklinks, 81 comments) on Friday, March 28, 2008 at 6:01:06 PM

THE U.S. OCCUPATION OF IRAQ IS BUILT ON GUILT AND LIES AND WILL CONTINUE AS LONG AS WE DO NOTHING TO STOP IT.
<fieldset class="zemanta-related" style="margin: 0.5em 0pt 1em; padding: 0pt"><legend class="zemanta-title">Related articles</legend>

‘Guilt and Lies’ [via Zemanta]

</fieldset>

At March 30, 2008, anrdaz zemanta.com wrote:

hi from Zemanta!

Nice to see you using our service. In the excellent book Jewish Travellers, you can read the travelogue of Rabbi Benjamin ben Jonah of Tudela in Navarre, the most famous of Jewish travellers in the late Middle Ages. He finished the travels he describes in 1173:

[The Caliph of Baghdad] built, on the other side of the river, on the banks of an arm of the Euphrates which there borders the city, a hospital consisting of blocks of houses and hospices for the sick poor who come to be healed. Here there are about sixty physicians’ stores which are provided from the Caliph’s house with drugs and whatever else may be required. Every sick man who comes is maintained at the Caliph’s expense and is medically treated. Here is a building which is called Dar-al-Maristan, where they keep charge of the demented people… Whilst they abide there, they are provided with food from the house of the Caliph, and when their reason is restored they are dismissed and each one of them goes to his house and his home. Money is given to those that have stayed in the hospices on their return to their homes. Every month the officers of the Caliph inquire and investigate whether they have regained their reason, in which case they are discharged. All this the Caliph does out of charity to those that come to the city of Baghdad, whether they be sick or insane. The Caliph is a righteous man, and all his actions are for good.

FUCK BUSH.

what are you thankful for?

2008 Election

Miscellaneous

Peace

thanksgiving

This year, I’m most grateful for the successful treatment of my father-in-law’s prostate cancer, which caught us all by surprise back in February when an x-ray to diagnose L.’s hip pain revealed what his annual PSA tests had not. (Some of the rarer and more aggressive forms of prostate cancer do not raise the PSA above the normal range until they have metastasized.)

I am also thankful for my in-laws move to Vancouver from southern Oregon; for all of our instructors and fellow students at King Tiger Martial Arts; for great coworkers (who almost make up for my recently insane boss); for lower interest rates that allowed us – finally – to roll our odious student loans into our mortgage; for beautiful if below-freezing weather for Thanksgiving day; for having a talented, creative and generous mother-in-law to split the holiday cooking with me; and, for being born at a time and in a place (and with very little melanin) such that securing the necessities of life has never been a struggle.

By this time next year, I hope to be thankful for a President Elect John Edwards, a filibuster-proof Democratic majority in the Senate, the drawdown of troops in Iraq, the failure of Cheney to get his invasion of Iran, a new job for me, a job for my husband in one of the school districts closer to home, and less self-induced stress for L. (who is a perfectionist in all things, from his homework to his butterfly kicks).

We’re shutting the office down early today, and after that I’ll be home making pumpkin cheesecake, brioche and jalapeno-tequila cranberry sauce, so this is farewell until at least Friday. Have a fabulous Thanksgiving, y’all, and revel in your good fortune (whatever it is).

At November 22, 2007, Chief Wahoo clarkblog.org wrote:

This year's secular Thanksgiving prayer was written by the People's Economist Professor Kurgman, PhD,PhD,PhD. I will share it with you before we offer it at our table...

As much as I abhor Christianity, I occasionally attend progressive churches in my community - as long as the pastor expounds on socialism and its variants like environmental causes, and the rights of the oppressed masses of gays, wymyn, African-Americans, Palestinians, Hugo Chavez, and Hezbollah. Our local pastor, thank Lenin, rarely talks about anything else. He even asked me, a Marxist, to compose a prayer for this week's Thanksgiving sermon.

Now, everybody knows that Thanksgiving observance does nothing more than perpetuate the Holocaust of the Native American. What positive meaning could be found in such a grotesquely shameful holiday? Well, my admirable laser-sharp mind of an economist with three PhDs immediately found a brilliant, socially significant answer.

Blessing of the Government Taxes

Let us pray.

Let me, Dear God, shift the paradigm on this Thanksgiving and blissfully give thanks for the gift of government, and thank the government for the gift of taxes. Bless my taxes, O God! Give me peace of mind as I rejoice in filling out forms and returning money to its rightful owner, the government. Keep me joyous, I pray, as I write out those checks. Yea, Lord, we know that there is little reason to be joyous with this Administration's imperialism and impending rape of the Iranian peaceful energy program, but the thought of a new tax year still brings to us a swelling tear of joy. And whisper to me, Lord, all the good reasons that I send my money to my government every year.

Raise my awareness to the fact that I could not write this prayer, and would be a barely-functioning illiterate living in the gutter, if I had not received a free tax-subsidized education; my parents could not have afforded both my tuition and their own tax payments, so my tuition was supplied, at no expense to anyone, by the government. Remind me of how my mind has been so wondrously calibrated by our free public schools!

Gently show me that the Internet, through which I send this prayer to others, was created by committees of civil servants. Help me to recall that my freedom to pray as I wish was purchased with tax dollars that paid for dairy price supports. Quietly kiss me as you raise my awareness that the only deserving people, the most noble among us, are those who subsist on government programs -- paid for with our taxes. My Lord my God, fondle me as you energize me with the hopefulness of higher taxes that can pay for an even more effective Internal Revenue service, which in turn can collect even more taxes for an even more effective Internal Revenue Service, which will culminate in an ecstatic spiral of an all-encompassing tax-collecting mechanism that will be accountable to no one except to the spirit of economic justice.

Reveal to me, Lord, in my mind's eye, the public health workers, the regulators of the environment and of commerce, the employees of the Department of Energy, and the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Education, and the Administration for Children and Families, and the Minerals Management Service, and the Rural Business-Cooperative Service, and the Minority Business Development Agency , and the Japan-United States Friendship Commission , and the Government National Mortgage Association, and the Housing and Urban Development Department, and the Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements, and the Institute of Peace, and the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Small Business Administration, and the Superfund Basic Research Program , and the President's Commission on Moon, Mars and Beyond, and the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and the Office of Thrift Supervision, and the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission , and the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee , and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, and the Stennis Center for Public Service, and the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation , and the Peace Corps, and the Office of Public and Indian Housing, and the President's Council on Integrity and Efficiency, and the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare, and the National Interagency Fire Center, and the Northwest Power Planning Council, and the Multifamily Housing Office , and the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer, and especially the Internal Revenue Service, and all the other things that my taxes and your taxes make possible.

And please, Lord, remind my brothers and sisters that they should liquidate their savings accounts and mutual funds, bonds and CDs, so that they too can be forced to turn it over to the greatest bargain of all that is Social Security. Educate me, Dear One, of how difficult life was for the sick and elderly before they paid throughout their entire careers, with threat of imprisonment, 14% of their wages for the iron-clad guarantees of Social Security. Please, Lord, make everyone realize that there is no investment more secure, and none that gives such a generous return, as Social Security.

Take me out of my selfishness and give me a spirit of gratitude as I write those tax checks! Remind me of my own virtue as I inform the IRS of cheaters. Inspire me to see that my sacred duty is to serve those who are unable to provide "value" to others, or are unwilling to provide anything for themselves. And that my highest calling is to ensure that others return whatever they have to the Government that You have created.

O Dear One, there are so many ways I wish my taxes could be spent! I'm willing, O Lord, to pay even more in taxes if it would work for the common good: We need a strong government to take back from the rich few and generously give to the many! Lord my God, please put the brakes on commerce, remove all profits from the pigs who "produced" it, and turn it all over to those who deserve it. So, more than ever, dear God, give me the strength and the vision to rise up and press my government to unapologetically take back what is ours. My sacred duty as a spokesperson for the working class can only be fulfilled if we organize, advocate, protest, resist, agitate, and speak truth to power by writing tax checks. I ask for your guidance, God, as I join with others to change the priorities and values of our government, so that they reflect more of our collective will, and my struggle, as expressed through your will.

Lord, you have created all men and wymyn as equals. Any disparity from your plan is an affront to decency. And so I pray, my Dear Lord, that you fulfill your vision for true equality, and remove all excess. In service to you, my Lord, we will not rest until everyone is truly equal. Tax the rich. Sicken the healthy. Scar the beautiful. Destroy the "successful". Drown the bankers. Blind the stock traders. Cripple the athletes and sever the hands of the musicians. Plant carnivorous bacteria in the brains of those who score high on racist "IQ" tests. Deliver wasting diseases to the strong. Starve and stone the executives and managers. Show no mercy to the blood-sucking merchants as they suffer merciless deaths in the searing flames of gargantuan infernos. Smash capitalism and deliver us, Dear One, to our deserved socialist paradise.

May your blessing rest on my Form 1040, dear Lord, and may my taxes well serve you and my fellow citizens!

Amen.

At November 22, 2007, bushtool democracyforvancouver.org wrote:

This prayer is rather delusional don't you think?

What about having love, respect and compassion for one another?

This is not a Thanksgiving prayer, it is a disgrace.

At November 22, 2007, slim nofishnonuts.blogspot.com wrote:

Chief, I don't think I deserved that in reply to my good-natured post.
