    Random Recitals

A man who lies to himself, and believes his own lies, becomes unable to recognize truth, either in himself or in anyone else, and he ends up losing respect for himself and for others. When he has no respect for anyone, he can no longer love, and in him, he yields to his impulses, indulges in the lowest form of pleasure, and behaves in the end like an animal in satisfying his vices. And it all comes from lying to others and to yourself.
    Fyodor Dostoevsky

    back in the saddle

It only takes a 7.0 earthquake devastating the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere to get me back blogging again. I’m so lame.

I’m donating 100% of gross receipts from my Etsy shop til the end of January to Dr. Paul Farmer’s organization, Partners in Health, if you want to make a donation and get something spiffy for your Valentine to boot. I’m going to [...]

    walk & knock TOMORROW

If you’re in Vancouver, please don’t forget the Walk & Knock food drive tomorrow – have your bags on the front stoop by 9am and we won’t have to bug you by knocking at the door!

In its 24 year history, Walk and Knock has collected 5,695,018 lbs of food valued at just over $7.4 million. All of this accomplished by non-paid volunteers, in a single [...]

“The injunction of Jesus to love others as ourselves is an endorsement of self-interest,” Goldman [Sachs]’s Griffiths said Oct. 20, his voice echoing around the gold-mosaic walls of St. Paul’s Cathedral, whose 365-feet-high dome towers over the City, London’s financial district. “We have to tolerate the inequality as a way to achieving greater prosperity and opportunity for all.”

    caught a badddd bug

and have been out of commission since Friday. Only benefit was I got through most of Jon Krakauer’s Where Men Win Glory: a wonderful, horrible read about Pat Tillman’s decision to leave the NFL for the Army Rangers after 9/11, and all that BushCo did to use him and abuse his family after his friendly fire death in Afghanistan.

Truly, it is to read and [...]

    mayberry mussolini

I’m sure by now you’ve read or heard about John Perry’s cris de coeur begging the military to take care of “the Obama problem.” Some, like Jurassic Pork, have even questioned whether Perry is a real person or just some military officer in drag, projecting the tea-baggers’ “take our country back” screed through a civilian straw man.

Unfortunately, Perry is a real person: [...]

i still don't know all the sociopolitical reasons

for why we’ve become this way, but curv3ball nails it anyway.

if it wasn't for bad luck...

I once cut off the end of my left-hand ring finger in a buffet-line plate warmer. (It just missed taking all of the nailbed, so I’m lucky to have a weird – but existent – fingernail.)

I broke two toes on my right foot while swimming by entangling them in the lane divider rope. A couple of years earlier I’d broken one of the same [...]
