how does bill kristol manage to breathe

this modern world - bill kristol

when he is so obviously brain dead?

Kristol’s prescription for a quick GOP comeback from their 2008 electoral failure? Put George Bush front and center to explain his Administration’s myriad successes to an American public too dumb to recognize Dear Leader’s greatness:

[H]e could do his party–and the nation–a service by reminding Americans of our successes fighting the war on terror.

Bush can explain to Americans just how his administration’s detention, interrogation, surveillance, and other counterterrorism policies have helped keep us safe… This would be a real service to the country. It would also force a rethinking, by those capable of rethinking, of the cheap and easy demagoguing on issues like Guantánamo and eavesdropping. Over time, Bush might even get deserved credit for effective conduct of the war on terror.

One last thing: Bush should consider pardoning–and should at least be vociferously praising–everyone who served in good faith in the war on terror, but whose deeds may now be susceptible to demagogic or politically inspired prosecution by some seeking to score political points… The CIA agents who waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and the NSA officials who listened in on phone calls from Pakistan, should not have to worry about legal bills or public defamation. In fact, Bush might want to give some of these public servants the Medal of Freedom at the same time he bestows the honor on Generals Petraeus and Odierno. They deserve it.

If Kristol wasn’t too busy being the Court Fluffer, he might have had a chance to read the opinion piece this weekend in the Washington Post by one of those interrogators who “kept us safe”:

I should have felt triumphant when I returned from Iraq in August 2006… But instead of celebrating our success, my mind was consumed with the unfinished business of our mission: fixing the deeply flawed, ineffective and un-American way the U.S. military conducts interrogations in Iraq. I’m still alarmed about that today.

I’m not some ivory-tower type; I served for 14 years in the U.S. Air Force, began my career as a Special Operations pilot flying helicopters, saw combat in Bosnia and Kosovo, became an Air Force counterintelligence agent, then volunteered to go to Iraq to work as a senior interrogator. What I saw in Iraq still rattles me — both because it betrays our traditions and because it just doesn’t work.

I learned in Iraq that the No. 1 reason foreign fighters flocked there to fight were the abuses carried out at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. Our policy of torture was directly and swiftly recruiting fighters for al-Qaeda in Iraq… It’s no exaggeration to say that at least half of our losses and casualties in that country have come at the hands of foreigners who joined the fray because of our program of detainee abuse. The number of U.S. soldiers who have died because of our torture policy will never be definitively known, but it is fair to say that it is close to the number of lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. How anyone can say that torture keeps Americans safe is beyond me — unless you don’t count American soldiers as Americans.

It’s no surprise that Bill Kristol believes George Bush is the answer to what ails the Republican Party; Bush is every inch the bullying, ignorant coward that Kristol would be if he was born with testicles. Bush has raised Kristol’s gift for failing upwards into an art form, so how could Kristol do otherwise than to bask in the reflected glory of the man who actually does the things that little Billy dreams of, but is too frightened to?

Usually the cowardly henchman is the manservant to the evil genius. How much more pathetic does it make Kristol that his Patrón is an idiot manchild like himself?

  • I had the privilege of attending the Ivins-Kristol debate in Portland a few years back. It never ceases to amaze me how people can live in a reality solely of their own choosing and completely disconnected from the empirical evidence around them. Ivins did a great job of explaining the facts of life to the audience but you cannot make someone listen if he chooses not to hear.
