But would it have been so hard to incorporate the title of the art ("The Politics of Fear") somewhere in the picture? Even if it had been a slogan on the wall it would have kept its satirical value while serving as a double entendre. And this is something the New Yorker has a history of doing (incorporating a mental directional arrow in their cover art).

Every year it seems the New Yorker does funny less and less well. Harold Ross would be appalled.

I was shocked when I first saw this cartoon. I cringed at the thought that many average folk may not get the satire and become even more skeptical of Obama.

Ryan Lizza, the author of the article about Obama thats in the same edition of the NYer, (13july) was asked to explain it today on npr and he said "Satire does not come with subtitles". He has a point. By cowering from intelligence, in this case satire that takes some thought to interpret as intended, we are helping the dumbing down process. However, I understand that we are all on pins and needles, holding our breath till November when we will be able to freely express ourselves. I resent that we have to tiptoe around those with lots of dumbness yet lots of power. But I'm mostly willing to tiptoe. I guess the NYer is not.

This will probably be passed around email lists from now until election day. And it will be completely lost on many people that it is meant to be satire.

All the media has to do is make enough uninformed, already frightened voters not feel comfortable with Obama and McCain wins by default.

What frightens me is how easy it is to manipulate the public.

There is an OpEdNews poll that has been added to this site in the first sidebar column at the bottom about this controversy.
