But I have an inkling this is just more political assholery from the master flip-flopper himself:
I’ve supported every investigation and ways of finding out what caused the tragedy. I’ve been here to New Orleans. I’ve met with people on the ground. I’ve met with the governor. I’m not familiar with exactly what you said, but I’ve been as active as anybody in efforts to restore the city.
Uh-huh.
From Mother Jones, just one short month ago:
[McCain] was quoted in The New Leader on September 1 [4 days after Katrina made landfall] cautioning against over-spending in support of Katrina’s victims. “We also have to be concerned about future generations of Americans,” he said. “We’re going to end up with the highest deficit, probably, in the history of this country.”
Somehow that didn’t seem to give him any pause when voting for massive war and defense budget funding; I guess killing people is more cost-effective than saving them.
That must account for his votes against veterans funding, too: the only soldier worth funding is the one in theater; after that, they’re as valuable to McCain as spent ammo.
Back to MJ:
That attitude was borne out in McCain’s actions and votes. Forty Senators and 100 members of Congress visited New Orleans before he did; he finally got there in March 2006. He voted against establishing a Congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local responses to Katrina in med-September 2005. He repeated that vote in 2006. He voted against allowing up to 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to people affected by the hurricane, and in 2006 voted against appropriating $109 billion in supplemental emergency funding, including $28 billion for hurricane relief.
$28 billion. That’s 82 days in Iraq.
At least McCain’s priorities are clear.
Or is it possible McCain’s staffers just don’t know how to read? Maybe they just figure their target demographic are too stupid to.
