Local Humane Society bursting with cats and would like your help

Story is hitting all the area media outlets about a local elderly woman who was overwhelmed with keeping 42 cats in her home. According to The Columbian:

Animal protection officers on Tuesday seized about 42 cats — many suffering from medical problems and malnutrition — in a raid at the home of an elderly woman on Southeast 11th Street in east Vancouver.

These stories just sadden me terribly because it means that the local shelter is now overwhelmed too. This is cat season. Which means they already are overflowing with abandoned kittens and to have this many more come all in at once is crisis time.

So if you have some time or money to volunteer, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington would sure benefit from your help.

  1. I just dropped off a check on my lunch hour. Wish we could adopt but we’ve got a full house already (1 dog, 2 cats, 5 fish, 1 frog, 2 mice, 1 stickbug).

  2. I should add that the Humane Society has taken in more than 14,000 animals since January first, 850 of them already this month.

    Current count for me

    6 dogs, 5 cats, 2 birds, 8 chickens, 2 fish and we have fostered hundreds more for HSSW. And we love and cherish them all.

    Thankfully they are finally building a new, much needed, bigger shelter on 194th avenue on land donated by the county. It is supposed to break ground this summer.

    42 cats coming in at once fill up an entire cat ward. And they only have 2 stray cat wards. Thanks again for helping the critters.

  4. We briefly fostered one of the dogs that was rescued from the hoarding case mentioned above. She is being treated for chronic bronchitis and could not make it up our stairs. A very sweet dog but one that would be very hard to get adopted because of her health issues.

    She now is with another rescue operation that specializes in these types of cases.
