better living through chemistry

I was up most of the night with L., who is in the midst of his first unresponsive-to-medication migraine. Three Tylenol 3s and 6 ibuprofen later, and he’s just comfortable enough to veg out on the sofa watching The Cat Returns.

So, I took this morning off, and J. took off this afternoon so he can take L. to the doc to get him on daily prophylactic meds. It’s a last resort - I did not want to mess with L.’s developing brain chemistry - but he’s up to an average of one migraine a week, and in just the last week he’s had three. Not what you want to watch your kid go through.

I’m playing catch up in the office, so this will be my only post today, but it’s probably for the best. Today has been an absolute WTF?! day, news-wise:

Senate OKs Immunity for Telecoms

A big FUCK YOU to all the Dems who went along with the cloture vote: Baucus (D-MT), Bayh (D-IN), Carper (D-DE), Casey (D-PA), Conrad (D-ND), Feinstein (D-CA), Inouye (D-HI), Johnson (D-SD), Kohl (D-WI), Landrieu (D-LA), Lincoln (D-AR), McCaskill (D-MO), Mikulski (D-MD), Nelson (D-FL), Nelson (D-NE), Pryor (D-AR), Rockefeller (D-WV), Salazar (D-CO), Webb (D-VA), and Whitehouse (D-RI). How much did the big boys pay you to bend over for them?

And where was your “ready on Day One” leadership today, Sen. Clinton? Were you too busy writing hanky-wringing letters to those mean old people at MSNBC to show up for the vote?

GM reports record $38.7 bln annual loss in 2007

Funny how GM’s 2007 losses balance almost exactly Exxon’s 2007 profits. How are those Hummers workin’ out for ya?

US Compares 9/11 Trials to Nuremberg

(…but without all those pesky defendant rights.)

Guards, reserves 53% of US vet suicides

I wonder why?

  1. You have to give the Senate an “A” for consistently being on the wrong side of most every issue.

Do you really think Harry Reid would have voted against telcom immunity if it had a chance of not passing? It is all a shell game.

Except for one or two of them, hope I live to see the day that this pack of weasels are fired and replaced with people that care about something more than power, money and fear.

  2. Sorry about your son’s migraine problem. I am lucky that I’ve only had a couple in my entire life. I suffer from chronic sinus headaches instead.

There are some prescriptions that kind of work. Have you tried meditation as a therapy?

My spouse gets migraines on Sundays after crashing from a stressful week so I know they can be triggered by a sudden reduction in high stress levels. Therefore managing the day to day stress level helps to manage the migraine. Just my two cents

  3. Thanks, bushtool. L. does have some issues with stress (he wants to be perfect at everything, from school to taekwondo to guitar), and I work with him on relaxing visualization. Unfortunately, his brain wiring is made for migraines, as it comes down from my grandfather to my mom to me and now to him.

The teen boys I know who went through migraines in late elementary school and middle school tell me the headaches ended on their own by age 14 or 15, so I’m hoping L. gets a break and that he will, eventually, see a natural end to these.

Best wishes to your spouse - I know about weekender migraines. One of my worst was the day before my wedding, when all the arrangements were finally made and all that was left to do was walk down the aisle… Thankfully, there was demerol in the house.
