Vice President Cheney signed on to a brief filed by a majority of Congress yesterday that urged the Supreme Court to uphold a ruling that the District of Columbia’s handgun ban is unconstitutional, breaking with his own administration’s official position.
Cheney joined 55 senators and 250 House members in asking the court to find that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess firearms and to uphold a lower court’s ruling that the D.C. ban violates that right.
How appropriate that this makes the news almost 2 years to the day after Cheney shot his friend Harry Whittington in the face.
And how cruelly inappropriate that Cheney and all those others - Republicans and Democrats alike - in the Senate and in Congress are fighting D.C.’s handgun ban in the wake of so many shootings just in the past week:
Orlando - Five Shot at Orlando House Party
Philadelphia - Series of Overnight Shootings Plague The City
Oakland - Two dead, five injured in spate of Oakland shootings
Baton Rouge - Woman kills two students, self, in latest deadly US shooting
Colorado Springs - 2 Dead, 2 Injured After Colorado Springs Shooting
Milwaukee - Police Looking for Suspects After 4 Separate Shootings Leave 12 Injured
Mountain View, CA - Two shot, one dead after Thursday night mayhem
Kirkwood, Missouri - Six dead in city council rampage
Chicago - Five dead in Chicago shooting tragedy
Baltimore - US boy shot family as they slept
And just today: Student shoots classmate in Memphis school cafeteria: official
And these don’t even scratch the surface.
I don’t care what excuses you make. If you can look at all the gun violence in the U.S. and think (1) that we need more guns; and/or (2) that guns don’t kill people: You are a fucking gun nut. Guns are more important to you than actual human lives.
So Kay Bailey Hutchison and Mike Huckabee, forgive me if I don’t agree with you that we should all carry guns to protect ourselves and each other. If government did its job by making assault weapons illegal and regulating gun ownership so that guns could not so easily fall into the hands of children, the insane, insane children or violent criminals, there would be no need for the average individual to carry an executioner’s weapon with them at all times.
The GOP “ownership society”: every man for himself.
