By a single vote, Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked an expansive fiscal stimulus package championed by Democrats, as partisan rancor engulfed the effort to inject a quick burst of spending into the slowing economy.

The measure was opposed by Republican leaders who said the Democrats added too many costly provisions, including an extension of unemployment benefits, tax credits for the coal industry* and increased subsidies for home energy costs.

The total cost of the Senate plan came to about $204 billion over two years, or about $40 billion more than the House version.

Now, I think the rebates are about as dumb a way to stimulate this economy as you can get (as the sign at Eco Tire on Main Street reads: “Are rebates the answer? Does candy cure cancer?”). But something needs to be done, and once Bush opened his fat gob and said “rebates” there was no way to get a stimulus package without them.

With that in mind: Harry Reid, what the fuck are you doing? When are you going to learn how to fight? Where were you yesterday, when cloture was in question? I didn’t see you on the teevee or hear a peep from you about how the Republicans were fucking this up for everyone, and now the GOP is getting out in front with their “stoopit Dems messed with the package so we had to stop it” meme.

It’s an election year, Harry. Get your thumb out of your ass and start poking it in a few Republican eyes - especially that pussy McCain who’d rather sit it out than declare himself one way or the other. The electorate will thank you for it come November.

I know why. Lobbyist and campaign money from the the coal industry is a big number. The money party works for them not us. And until we have public financing of campaigns, Congress works for them, not us. They pay them more than “the people” do.

It’s the same BS about the taxpayers paying for the primaries. They (both parties) rape us, and the Demo’s more than the puggies. All votes for the primaries should be on mail in ballot. People who have to work during caucus hours are screwed. But you still pay for being screwed, don’t we?

Well, when is this web site, if ever, going to start raising hell and get this fixed?

Our election systems need fixing too. People noticed there was a problem in the 2000 election. But here we are 8 years later and imo our election systems are much easier to manipulate today due to black box voting than 8 years ago.

Every four years we hear about the electoral college system being archaic and obsolete. And every four years we use the system all over again.

Hell, we don’t even have a constitution that is being upheld anymore. And will our elected leaders do anything about that? It is not looking like they will.

The problems are so many and so varied it is difficult to figure out where to start and what is a priority anymore.

We are in deep doo-doo.

Personally I try to work on how we elect our so-called representatives since they are the people that can make things happen like impeachment, fixing voter systems, primary election systems, Supreme Court appointments, etc., etc. I do this by volunteering my time to Washington Public Campaigns (www.washclean.org).

As our system stands today, our representatives do not have much reason to represent us. It is much more important that they raise enough money and that they keep the media on their side promoting them to the public in a positive way.

This website isn’t going to fix anything. Only people working towards fixing things are going to fix things.
