Four years ago today, I got the call telling me that my dearest friend was brain dead from post-partum hemorrhage; the next two days were a blur of grief and pain as I waited for the call telling me her life support had been disconnected. Today I will celebrate Karen’s life, and the beautiful little girl Karen only got to spend a few hours with before being whisked away for the emergency surgery that, in the end, could not save her.
Karen’s blood type was AB+, and she needed 23 units during surgery; there was not enough blood in the hospital or even the county, so state troopers were send at 100+ MPH up and down Montana’s highways collecting blood from other facilities for her. Today I will go give blood in her memory, and I ask you to do the same for your loved ones and your community - there is never enough on hand when it’s really needed. Call 1-800-GIVELIFE (1-800-448-3543) or go here to find a blood drive in your area.
Happy Birthday, A. Laissez le bon temps rouler - your mom always did.
