props to obama

running clock

I didn’t get to watch/listen to much last night, but it looks like young, first-time voters made their mark, which is terrific. It should have been that way in 2004, but there was a lot of cynicism still floating around from the 2000 debacle and all of the Nader “no difference between Dems and the GOP” meme floating around. (While I agree that there are plenty of Dems who’d be perfectly comfortable with the corporatist Republicans - yes, Hillary, I’m talking to you - we’ve got a much better chance at a progressive Dem grabbing the brass ring this time around.)

So, all the best to Obama and his supporters, and keep up the momentum. We need a candidate who can keep a head of steam going for 10 excruciatingly long months, and seeing the enthusiasm of the Iowa turnout can only inspire the rest of the field to do better.

Don’t get me wrong - John Edwards is still my guy until the fat lady sings. But I’m glad to see there is energy enough out there to double the normal Iowa caucus turnout. I hope we see the same here in Washington on February 9.

On a lighter note, the best neologism of the evening definitely goes to Atrios:

Huckenfreude, n.: the joy Dems feel watching the misfortune and suffering of corporatist tax-cut Republicans as they get bitten in the ass by the evangelical monster they created.

Mike Huckabee
