Senior Citizens Commission

There is a real need for a senior citizens’ commission in the city of Vancouver USA. The current senior population in the city of Vancouver is about one third of the citizens and growing. A senior commission would consider the needs of seniors and be run and administered by seniors who are in a position to know the needs of elderly people. It would also deal with ADA requirements for the honored citizens and save the city lost revenue due to litigation. With a senior citizen commission the city would work with the large senior population and reap benefits due to their knowledge and understanding of senior needs.

DUTIES: The Senior Citizens Commission would study, review, and evaluate senior needs and make recommendations to the City Council on any matters affecting elderly people in the City, including health, education, employment, housing, transportation and recreation and ADA requirements. The Commission by seniors could help the city of Vancouver by their insightful recommendations. Seniors usually have the knowledge and work experience that is invaluable when they are part of the process and acknowledge for their contributions. Imagine what unique talents could be utilized with just a little encouragement. And yes, there are many educated, bright and talented seniors who are willing and able to help. They just need to be asked. Even though it would be separated from Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, it would work closely to insure senior needs and ADA compliance.

It is very important that seniors be the honored citizens in this community and well represented for the contributions given to this community. If you look at the lists of commissions on the city of Vancouver’s website, you soon realize the one commission that should be there but missing is for seniors. This information was originally given to the Vancouver City Council by me in early 2006. No action was ever taken by the city council to move this forward or even look at its possibilities.

    “We want you to set up a shadow City Government, that is made up only of Charlie Stemper, Larry Patella, and all of their Senior Citizen friends, and force Vancouver City Council to ask us to approve anything that they decide they want to look at. If we don’t approve it first, then City Council cannot do anything with it; and since none of us approves of anything, don’t look for a damned thing to ever get done in the City from now on.”

    Does that about conver it for you??

    That is just a bunch of BS. There is nothing in the City of Vancouver’s Charter that would ever allow such a ridiculous proposition, and any attempt to do so would no doubt be found unconstitutional by the State Supreme Court; and believe me there would be a lawsuit, and lawsuits are something that the Larry Patella clan knows plenty about.

    Charlie Stemper and his good friends have some very unusual ideas about how they think things ought to work around here, and instead of trying to force their way into the business of the duly elected Civil Government, Charlie, Larry, and a lot of their friends might do well to go home and call the insurance carrier to see if high colonics are covered under the family medical plan instead. I think a good enema might benefit many of them mightily.

  3. If I were trolling, I would not have used my real name, e-mail address, or URL for you to dispute me on what I had to say. I stand by every syllable I had to say, and I believe I am far more civil in this post than it deserves. If you dispute anything that I said, I invite you to point it out so we can discuss it, otherwise, let’s get past the face sanctimony, shall we?? If what I said was so offensive, why leave it up?

    Standing meekly by like sheeple and letting a candidate for public office like Charlie Stemper suggest something like this, on this website of all places, frankly astounds me. Some have suggested to me before that D4V wouldn’t know what to think about anything, if MoveOn.org and Code Pinko didn’t put out a memo first, and it’s looking more like that is true with every post from Stemper that you all allow to go unchallenged. Is D4V really that disconnected from local politics??

    If Charlie Stemper were a Republican, you people would be tearing him to shreds; why the free pass on this now?

    You don’t need to shield Charlie Stemper from answering real questions about issues he purports to be running on. He does far to good of a job of that all by himself. He runs from real questions, so when I find where he is posting his propaganda online, in the vain hope of going unchallenged, I’ll follow him so he knows what I think.

    Someone needs to do it!

    When standing for election, a reasonable man should be prepared to face some scrutiny and answer some questions about the things he purports to stand for. Mr. Stemper apparently missed that memeo, and this piece of his sounds more like he’s worried about job opportunities after the election, instead of pursuing a serious run at City Council.

    Sorry that stark truths sound so harsh. Delete them if they truly offend the delicate sensibilities of the members of this website.

    I don’t get the “unconstitutional” part. City government regularly sets up citizen commissions/boards that function to provide recommendation and input to board members (or commissioners).

    What is so threatening about a senior board?

    Frankly a suggestion that merely setting up a citizen board is creating a “shadow government” is a bit paranoid. I, for one, would love to see a citizen review board in the Vancouver PD.

  5. Charlie’s comments about having a senior board are in line with a number of suggestions I’ve received from others over the years. I also get comments from parents and teens that the young people would like to have more input. (Having been a member of the Methamphetamine Action Team, I know both teens and seniors have much real world experience to contribute to real world solutions.)

    The political leanings of Mr. Stemper and Mr. Patella would surprise Mr. Koski.

    I appreciate D4V being open to ideas and not political labeling and demonization in our local politics.

    If it is one thing I’m getting pretty sick of, it’s flaming. I long for an intelligent discussion. Mr. Koski clearly has some strong feelings and beliefs; perhaps some are even important and need to be added to the discussion. I grow so tired of name-calling.

    Trolling is trolling, whether done under a nom-de-plum or under the poster’s real name.
    Contrary points of view are welcome and essential to political discourse.
    We simply draw the line at name-calling or abusive language.
    We don’t want this forum to degenerate to a state resembling The Columbian’s comment arena and will take action, accordingly.
