Taxation Without Representation

With the help of the city’s lobbyist Mr. Brown, the state has established a special taxing district for the city of Vancouver. Supposedly it would cover transportation cost in the downtown area. It is an establish district within the city to collect taxes without voter approval bypassing what is the fundamental right of individuals in America, the right to vote. And shame on the elected officials that have taken away our individual rights.

In past dealings with city officials, I’ve asked some simple questions regarding financial programs that supposedly would make Vancouver the premier city of the Pacific Northwest. One particular manager indicated that he could not answer the question that I asked because it was too complicated and that I wouldn’t understand the answer. From his non answer, what I did understand was that tax money was being squandered and that there was no logical reason to believe that it would ever stop.

Now the city council has the power to tax your vehicle up to $100 plus the state fee of $35, in addition to sales and property taxes and all the other miscellaneous taxes on your phone, electric, gas, garbage and utility fees for city water and sewer. These bills never go down. Have you seen an improvement in service? The answer is probably a flat no. Government feels justified probably because they don’t think that you as a taxpayer would understand their need. You may be smart enough to earn it with hard work, but you’re not smart enough to understand how it should be spent.

My belief is that we understand all too well how the system of waste works. What we would like to see is a system that works for people. A system that says it is my right to vote on how you spend my money and please quit wasting it on hotels and bridges to nowhere. My improved website is at www.nuvoice.com.

  1. Charlie,

Do you know if it is subject to the same regulations as a Port District? If so we could petition like we did for the Port…(not that I’m against services if provided, ie living wage/union jobs and transportation, but it seems to me if all were doing with the money is giving land to the Angelo family, well maybe it is time to dry up the spigot. At least until we regular people start reaping some of the tax perks.

  2. It isn’t the same situation as the Port because it was the state legislators that created the law to create a special taxing district for the city of Vancouver. It is the state government creating a law giving the ok for the city of Vancouver to tax you and me without the due process of voting. The city already had that authority but didn’t want to put it up for a public vote for fear of it being defeated.

  3. When the city council directs lobbyist Brown to seek such legislation bypassing the voters there is a problem. Mr. Brown does not just go up to Olympia on his own as some would like you to think now that they are up for reelection. Please give Charlie and me your vote. Thanks, Pat

  4. I am in full agreement with Pat Campbell. We can change the direction of Vancouver and make it a city that serves people. Both Pat and I believe the same basic principle that governments are supposed to serve people all the time not make it appear that way when your running for reelection. We need change and we need it now. You deserve to be represented.

  5. You have our votes. Best of luck to you both.
