another open senate seat

The pajamas incident makes a lot more sense now:

WASHINGTON — Health concerns — specifically, a disease that could affect his decision-making — are at the root of Sen. Pete Domenici’s decision to retire at the end of his term next year, party officials said.

The 75-year-old, six-term lawmaker plans a formal announcement today in Albuquerque. He is expected to say he suffers from frontotemporal lobar degeneration, a progressive disease that in some forms can cause dysfunction in the parts of the brain important for organization, decision-making and control of mood and behavior.

According to draft remarks prepared for the senator, Domenici intends to say that while he is confident of his ability to serve the remaining 14 months of his current term, he does not want to risk impairment over an additional six years in office.

No doubt Domenici will claim diminished capacity in the future when asked about his role in David Iglesias’s firing from the DOJ.

The big question now: Will the Dems contest his seat or just politely cede it back to the Republicans?
