Democracy for Vancouver

My sister and brother-in-law both work at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina (alma mater of Tony Snow, but other than that a great school). A group of students there have organized a trip down to Jena, Louisiana to join the mass protest in support of the Jena 6, which is taking place tomorrow.

The following is a letter my sister forwarded to me from one of the students heading down to Jena:

My name is Darrell Scott and I’m one of the organizers for the trip to Jena, Louisiana. I was told that you were looking for things for you and your children to do here in Davidson while we’re gone. First, if you could educate as many people as possible about the atrocities going on, we’d very much appreciate that. Second, everyone in support of the Jena 6 should be wearing black on Thursday to symbolize the darkness of the issue and the color of the boys being persecuted. Third, if you and your children would like, here’s Mychal Bell’s address:

Please write to him and express your support, if you please. More information can be found out about the events at www.colorofchange.org, www.freethejena6.org, and www.naacp.org. Having a “watch party” in your neighborhood seems like it would be a neat idea as well since CNN and Good Morning America will be covering the trial and protests.

Thank you so much for your willingness to spread the word about what’s going on. It really warms our hearts to know that so many people are passionate about this injustice and want to see something done.
