1. Baird advises facing realities….in Columbian. He wants to stay in Iraq forever. Those hundreds that were at the Town Hall meeting with him knew where he stood. It certainly was not with the majority of us that voted him in. There are a lot of additional concerns about Baird by many of my democratic friends. He refused to come and speak at our democratic group and answer our conerns. His responce to why we still have 37,000 troops in Korea costing billions each year was that he wanted to protect us from nuclear attack That was a lie I found out. He refused to respond to concerns about HMO’s ripping off medicare funds. He refused to explain what he intend to do about things being labeled ‘Made in America’ that came from Guam, Mexico, and South America. He refused to explain what he intended to do about war profiteering by companies making billions from this war. He refused to respond about Bush’s private armys such as Black Water making millions from the federal government.
   To really find out about Baird write him a letter asking for response and see what happens. Baird is looking out for Baird.

2. Thom Hartmann over at Common Dreams has penned an excellent article (the article is also on OpEdNews.com now) about Iraq from the perception of the people living there and what has been happening to them.

   He also has advice for solving the Iraq quagmire and obtaining “victory” (not a military victory which is impossible).

   Here is his recomendation:

   Instead, we should be asking: When we’re going to do in Iraq what we did in Europe after war destroyed that continent? When are we going to begin a big government’ solution, empower labor, raise taxes on the rich to reinstate social welfare programs for the poor, and protect local industries with tariffs and domestic content laws (like the Chinese and Japanese use)?

   I can hear the screams of socialism from the rabid right through my keyboard as I paste the above. But the FACT is, the above recommendations have WORKED in the past. What we have been doing in Iraq has not been working.

   “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result” is one definition of insanity.

   There is a statement in Hartmann’s piece which I don’t think is true:

   the real questions we should be asking won’t even be raised until there is a new President here in the United States.

   Unless an upset occurs in the 2008 election, we are going to just get more of the same. I hope I’m wrong.
