Prior to the convening of the town hall in Longview, I stood outside the Expo Center with my impeachment sign. I was the only person outside with a sign. I expected to be harrassed but many people said "thank you for being here" and not a single person said anything negative.
After the town hall started, I went inside where there were about 250 people I think. Practically the whole evening was about Iraq. It seemed like about 1/3 of the people were behind Baird and 2/3 want the U.S. out of Iraq a.s.a.p. and were disagreeing with him. There was an Iraq veteran there who is still in the service who thinks we can "win" with a little more perserverance. There were also some American Legion guys and a Republican Corps of Engineer man who has worked in Iraq. The most poignant moment for me was when an old family friend of Baird's named Bill got up. He told Baird he loved him but he could no longer support him. Baird really seemed taken aback. A man from the Cowlitz County Democrats told him that he no longer supports him and quite a number of people told him that he no longer represents them. Baird was given "points" for his courage in facing his constituents even though he knew it was not a popular decision (although I think the Republicans really like him). Almost everyone was for impeachment which surprised me. He gave his usual song and dance in response.
Several times he mentioned that this was a much nicer crowd than in Vancouver and that he had a "rough night" last night. The majority sentiment was definitely anti-war but people were very polite. I saw two people from Centralia that I knew, one of whom is in Veterans for Peace and the other was at one time a big Democrat.
