HD is dingy and dark, Lowes is clean and well lit. I've had nothing but pleasant shopping experiences at Lowes, with service people that might walk away when approached, but are stopped in their tracks with a quick "excuse me". In my research, especially on campaign contributions, their execs stay out of contributing to campaigns, or at least contribute equally between the two parties, IIRC. Contrast that with Home Depot, which is a major Republican contributor, at the "Pioneer" level. Lowes vs. Home Depot is like night and day. HD is dingy and dark, Lowes is clean and well lit. Although I find Lowe’s run-the-other-way approach to customer service rather annoying, I have spent my last dime at Home Depot.
On the whole, I prefer going to local chain A-Boy Hardware. You may pay a bit more, but you can count on excellent service and a knowledgeable, helpful staff.
