Lowe’s Tells O’Reilly to Pack Sand

I’m dealing with a home plumbing nightmare. I almost always loathe going to DIY stores. It’s almost always when I’m struggling with a major maintenance event, so it’s rarely a happy shopping moment. When I heard that Home Depot gave lots of money and PR effort to Bush, I naturally started going to smaller, local businesses. However, this job requires that I buy some of my supplies on the cheap, and so with tail between my legs, off I go to a big box - namely Lowe’s.
So when I saw this story, it put a smile on my face.

A reader emailed Lowes about their ads on O’Reilly’s show. They got this response:

Replied On 07/27/07 15:41:09

Dear Lowe’s Customer,

Thank you for your comments regarding the program, The O’Reilly Factor.

Lowe’s has strict guidelines that govern the placement of our
advertising. Our company advertises primarily in national, network
prime-time television programs and on a variety of cable outlets.

Lowe’s constantly reviews advertising buys to make certain they are consistent with its policy guidelines.  The
O’Reilly Factor does not meet Lowe’s advertising guidelines, and the
company’s advertising will no longer appear during the program.

We are dedicated to providing the best service, products, and
shopping environment in the home improvement industry.  All three of
these are very important to our business, and our customers will always
be our number one priority.

We appreciate your contacting us, and hope this information addresses your concerns.

Thank you,

Lowe’s Customer Care

  1. I am so done with Home Depot. Lowe’s is an extra mile drive but for them to actually respond to a customer complaint about O’Reilly is plenty motivation for me to go a little out of my way for them.

    Ditto…
Although I find Lowe’s run-the-other-way approach to customer service rather annoying, I have spent my last dime at Home Depot.
On the whole, I prefer going to local chain A-Boy Hardware. You may pay a bit more, but you can count on excellent service and a knowledgeable, helpful staff.

  3. Lowes vs. Home Depot is like night and day. HD is dingy and dark, Lowes is clean and well lit. I’ve had nothing but pleasant shopping experiences at Lowes, with service people that might walk away when approached, but are stopped in their tracks with a quick “excuse me”.

In my research, especially on campaign contributions, their execs stay out of contributing to campaigns, or at least contribute equally between the two parties, IIRC.

Contrast that with Home Depot, which is a major Republican contributor, at the “Pioneer” level.
