So the House Judiciary Committee approved contempt citations against White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former legal counselor Harriet Miers. That's good news.
However:
A senior Democratic official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the House itself likely would take up the citations after Congress' August recess. The official declined to speak on the record because no date had been set for the House vote.
Let me get this straight. The country is at war, the economy is falling apart (witness the blow-up of the subprime mortgage market), and Congress needs to move forward with contempt charges against senior administration officials. But rather than do the hard work, Congress will take its "traditional" August recess.
How much of a tradition is this? Only since 1971, with the advent of the Legislative Reorganization Acts, has Congress taken the August recess in odd-numbered years. There's an exception within the law that the August recess not be taken during wartime, but that provision requires an actual declaration of war, something Congress hasn't done since 1941.
The 2006 mid-term elections promised a harder working Congress. The average American is getting 12 days of vacation a year. Sometimes, I think Congress is living in Europe, with their personal access to universal healthcare and extensive time off. Too bad voters appear willing to put up with this strange arrangement. Good luck finding your local congresscritter during the August recess as well, as he or she is probably on a corporate lobbyist financed junket overseas, sipping on Mai Tais with pink umbrellas, and laughing at suckers.
