If I remember correctly, there was a specific Supreme Court justice who used some pretty crazy legal justification to apply the 14th Amendment to corporations.  Also, one railroad magnate had single-handedly succeeded in getting state legislatures to give corporations a much freer hand leading up to the Supreme Court's decision.</description>
