According to an Alternet story, the Iraqi parliament has passed a resolution for a timetable to end the US occupation of Iraq. The prime minister, al-Maliki, is expected to veto the resolution.
It is possible, even probable, that the Maliki regime will veto the resolution passed today. The White House’s separatist allies in Baghdad have consistently found ways to bypass the assembly. Al Mutlaq said today that the nationalist bloc probably doesn’t have the the two-thirds majority required to override a veto.
Does this remind you of a similar situation with the US Congress?
Contrary to what some US Congress members assert, there is no credible evidence that the Iraqis or the Iraqi government want US forces in their country any longer and much evidence to the contrary. We better hurry up and get permanent control of their oil. Oh that’s right, who cares what the Iraqis want. We will just replace them. No reason to hurry.
