Iraq protests a distraction - Gregoire

Well now, let us not concern our “beautiful minds” with Iraq…

Stop impeachment talk, Gregoire says

By MATTHEW DALY
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON — Gov. Chris Gregoire said Tuesday she agrees with Democratic members of Congress who have told Washington state legislators to stop pushing measures to impeach President Bush and reduce U.S. military involvement in Iraq.

“We’ve got plenty to do back home,” Gregoire said, ticking off a list that includes education, health care and economic development.

“Number one is fundamental reform of our education system. If we don’t do that, we ought to give ourselves an F,” she said.

Gregoire called the Iraq protests a distraction, adding she was “not going to bring up Iraq at all” in her talks with Washington state’s congressional delegation. Instead, she said she would talk about federal budget cuts, health care and a bill to reauthorize the federal No Child Left Behind education law.

Here is the rest.

I agree with Bill Moyer that Inslee, Murray and now Gregoire all deserve spineless citations (pdf) from the Backbone Campaign.

Chad (The Left) Shue chimes in over at Washblog regarding 2nd CD Rep. Rick Larsen voicing his support of spinelessness also.

  1. The illegal and immoral Iraq War is the biggest reason states have to deal with federal budget cuts. I’m glad the state is taking impeachment on, since the feds haven’t. Neutral

  2. More outrage:

    Dear Governor Gregoire,

I just heard on the radio that you oppose the rule of law. That you oppose holding people accountable. I heard that you don’t have enough confidence in the grassroots of our party, nor in the elected representatives of our party, to believe that we can do more than one thing at a time.

I heard that you oppose the resolution introduced by Senator Eric Oemig, SJM8016.

I’m on fire because of what this administration has done over the last 6 years. Aren’t you? I’m furious to the point of losing my mind about the carnage that we are waging in Iraq and round the world on the order of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. I’m incensed that they were allow to steal not one, not two but three election cycles without any accountability.

The NICEST thing that I can say about how I feel is that I want Dick Cheney and George Bush impeached. Their actions over the past 6 years are the reason that I am active in the Democratic Party, because the party is the last, best hope for the US Constitution, the Rule of Law, and the future of the world my children and grandchildren will be living in.

That’s why I’m insulted and ashamed when I hear that someone I respect so much, who has been doing a fantastic job over the last 2 years as governor of the greatest state in the United States, claims that defending our values and our country against a domestic enemy is nothing but a “distraction” from the real priorities that we should be focused on.

I ask you, Governor. Can’t you handle complexity?

As Thom Hartmann says, “Can’t the Democrats walk and chew gum at the same time?” The Republicans were able to pass lots of legislation while impeaching Clinton.

  3. Senator Murray had an idiotic quote as well in that same AP article, that impeaching Bush would result in President Cheney. The solution? Impeach Cheney you spineless losers!

Gregoire needs a little bit of a history lesson here — it was the anti-war left that went and chased down ballots that resulted in her RAZOR THIN victory margin in 2004.

Do Republicans ever act this way? Of course not, all the options are “on the table”. Putting impeachment pressure on this administration means that they’ll have less time to make invasion plans.

    *sigh*

  4. I personally chased down one of those Gregoire votes in Clark County and I know several others that also took the time to do the same…

I don’t understand why these pols are even commenting on this resolution. By not keeping their mouths shut, seems like they are going out of their way to piss off anyone that deeply cares about restoring our constitutional rights or ending the illegal occupation of Iraq.

Well then, why should we give a hoot about them?

If the WA State leadership doesn’t bury the effort, we already know that Pelosi will. Are they fronting for Pelosi so she can continue to avoid the inevitable constitutional crisis that awaits us?

  5. You must be joking! The Governor of our state has now determined that she can prioritize our opinions? Silly me, I was under the assumption that each of us, as citizens, had inalienable rights in regard to our criticism of the political process! I had thought that if and when the people splke, then THAT becomes the priority! Our ELECTED officials are to be representatives of the priorities OF THE PEOPLE and not of their own political agendas.

Listen up, because there are many of us who will continue to provide “distraction” in order to focus on what truly matters to the people of this state.
