It’s Official: New postal law lets Bush peek through your mail

Despite the arrival of a Democratic majority in the 110th Congress, we obviously still have an uphill battle:

WASHINGTON - President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans’ mail without a judge’s warrant, the Daily News has learned.

The President asserted his new authority when he signed a postal reform bill into law on Dec. 20. Bush then issued a “signing statement” that declared his right to open people’s mail under emergency conditions.

That claim is contrary to existing law and contradicted the bill he had just signed, say experts who have reviewed it.

Bush’s move came during the winter congressional recess and a year after his secret domestic electronic eavesdropping program was first revealed. It caught Capitol Hill by surprise.

“Despite the President’s statement that he may be able to circumvent a basic privacy protection, the new postal law continues to prohibit the government from snooping into people’s mail without a warrant,” said Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), the incoming House Government Reform Committee chairman, who co-sponsored the bill.

Experts said the new powers could be easily abused and used to vacuum up large amounts of mail.

Let’s hope the incoming lawmakers take a stand against this obvious fascist move.

  1. Didn’t we already cover this??

For the record, I am saving all of my junk mail on the outside chance someone from the Gubment wants to come and inspect it.

We have a lot of incoming mail, but other than Netflix, and Christmas Cards, we don’t mail much of anything anymore. We pay our bills online, and I have a Post Office Box under an assumed name where I have all of my subversive literature and other “private correspondence” sent to…

  2. Thanks for writing about this - this is an absolute frigging outrage!

Please tell every postal worker you know that this is unforgivable and must be challenged with every fiber of their being. I’ve set up a website - http://www.postalworkersunited.blogspot.com - to organize the opposition.

    Thanks for everything!

  3. Senator Feingold disagrees with you that the new postal law allows Bush to peek through our mail and so do I. Bush already has this power, rightfully, under FISA. The issue is whether Bush intends to or has extended warrantless eavesdropping on domestic telecommunications to searches of first class mail outside the purview of the FISA court. All concerned citizens should urge their congressmembers to demand that Bush respond to such an inquiry, whether his office has so authorized any government agency to conduct such searches.
