Dear Peace-folks,
This is your official invitation: Sept. 21st is International Peace Day. Events are being scheduled throughout the nation and world. We of Vancouver For Peace are really working to keep a focus on the local scene. Given that, the idea for this side of the river is to hold a PEACE CAMP from 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, Sept. 21st, at the Northwest corner of Mill Plain and Ft. Vancouver Way kitty-corner from the main library. We’ve cleared this event with the city; their only request is that we don’t use stakes because of sprinklers. Our goal for the day is primarily to celebrate the International Day of Peace and communicate our strong desire for our representatives to support the Declaration of Peace.
his event will be partially planned and partially spontaneous. To date we are planning:
- To create a “camp” by pitching canopies and bringing lawn chairs to establish a day-long vigil.
- Walking visits to the Congressional staff offices on Officer’s Row will take place throughout the day over. We are recommending that participants bring something to leave with each office—a letter, a piece of art work, a poem, a peace symbol of your own choosing—to make clear our collective cry for PEACE!
- We invite you to bring your contributions of music, poetry, a reading, art work, a craft —all contributing to the day via simple, spontaneous efforts. Please feel free to express your creativity and passion in your own way.
- If you can contribute materials, time, talent—including the talent of asking someone to join you that day, more details here.
Please make every effort to take advantage of this—another opportunity to love your neighbor! What better time than Autumn to warm hearts and minds for PEACE? Edie Cotton
