There was so much hope to be had that Bush would deliver on his promise to keep his 9/11 address to the nation free of political partisanship. ABC/Disney was already doing his dirty work that day, after all. Even he could set aside his agenda for the good of the country on this solemn occasion, right?
Was it too much to hope for Bush to remember how he brought the country together after 9/11 (albeit tenuously for some) and would use the fifth anniversary of one of the darkest days in the history of the nation to extend a genuine offer of unity? Was it so much to ask of this fraudulent president to set aside our differences over Iraq and a slew of other hot issues for one day that we as a country could properly honor not only those who died but also those who are now paying dearly for their selfless relief efforts in the wake of this awful day in 2001?
Turns out it was.
Bush’s address was mercifully short but laced with his standard “war on terror” obfuscations and demagoguery. His most egregious offense, however, was his whopper that the invasion and occupation of Iraq was justified because of the “clear threat” represented by Saddam Hussein’s regime.
Historians will be exploring the depths of this man’s depravity for generations.
